Recent trends in automotive electronics point towards a growing demand for sophisticated electrical & electronic systems in new vehicles. These systems are being implemented into vehicles at an ever-increasing rate and demanding more of the driver & passenger's attention to control and operate them. The incorporation of digital network buses, such as MOST, Media Oriented Systems Transport, builds the digital data infrastructure in the vehicle for some of these systems, while other systems exist in “stand alone” non-network configurations. Consequently, considerable attention must be given to the constraints around the control of each system in such a way that it is natural, intuitive and non-distracting for the driver / passengers, while at the same time is flexible enough to handle the application of additional network devices in a “Plug & Play” fashion. This paper will explore these constraints and discuss some of the approaches that are possible when utilizing the “Windows CE for Automotive” operating system for in-vehicle computing applications.
