A review of connecting rod and main bearing materials currently used in gasoline and diesel engines having displacement range of 170–800 cu in. is presented. Material applications and design trends are illustrated by “Load Factor” and L/D ratio charts. The formation of an SAE committee to establish standard bearing material evaluation methods is proposed.
