Since January 30, 1980 general merchandise carriers have received permits to operate vehicles on four lane divided highways in Saskatchewan that exceed the maximum legal length 23 m (75 ft. 5 ins.) specified by regulations. This paper provides an overview of the program and its success to date from a regulators vantage point. It also describes the vehicle configurations that are used, the conditions of permit the carriers must comply with and some indication of the efficiences that are associated with the overlength vehicles relative to legal units.
