In order to achieve humane working conditions for commercial vehicle drivers, it is imperative that engineers involved in commercial vehicle development analyse man and machine as an interactive system and design commercial vehicles in accordance with ergonomic principles from the very outset. The paper provides a survey of systematic development work of this type based on information including driver population and the type and duration of work inside and outside the vehicle for typical vehicle uses.
