The conflicting demands of packaging, performance, refinement and durability that are currently being placed on automotive valve trains require a hierarchy of methods if their design and development are to be accomplished efficiently. This paper describes these analytical and experimental tools and their use. The tools range from relatively simple methods for rapid design iterations to sophisticated dynamic models of the valve train and timing drive.
