Increased reliance on air transportation to support widespread military operations has produced important considerations for design of construction equipment. Characteristics of cargo aircraft, economics of transport, and design concepts for air transportable equipment are reviewed. Speed of movement, logistic economy, and unavailability of surface transportation in many regions are cited as factors that make air transportable equipment essential for future military operations.
