Particulates in Diesel Exhaust Gas have become a major concern of Environment Protection Agencies in the recent years. The main focus was placed on the so called Nano Particles which are the most harmful to human beeings.OEMs for car, light and heavy commercial vehicle industries have been working on different technologies for a number of years to meet the stringent emission legislations. At the same time some countries have started schemes to retrofit older vehicles that are still on the road and greatly contribute to air pollution. The government of Korea took the worldwide lead and defined 3 categories of required PM reduction rates and incentives to LDV and HDV owners who are prepared to retrofit their vehicles. The 3 Categories are defined as follows: This paper describes the experience which could be received in Korea with the technology and the performance of the PM Metalit®, which is suitable for OEM and retrofit applications. The PM Metalit® is a partial flow filter system, which cannot be blocked and works as a passive system. It is a durable add-on system that is inexpensive and maintenance-free.It was possible to verify PM reductions of 38, 9 % for Categorie 3 resp. 56.3 % for Categorie 2.PM Metalit® technology offers even higher efficiencies for small sized particulates (so-called nanoparticles) where a reduction of >80% was observed. The PM Metalit® utilises the so-called CRT effect (Continuous Regeneration Trap). This method requires higher concentrations of NO2 to regenerate the PM Filter cat. NO is converted to NO2 in an upstream oxidation catalyst, which oxidises the trapped particulates to CO2 while reducing NO2 back to NO.Due to the high sulphur content of diesel fuel, oxidation catalysts with a high catalytic coating form sulphates and prevent the oxidation of NO to NO2. Thus the potential for major PM reduction with the aid of a PM Metalit® is limited if high sulphur fuel is used. The limit to ensure sufficient efficiency is 50ppm.
