The effectiveness of ashless dispersants in solubilising soot has been investigated in terms of molecular parameters as maleic acid/polyisobutylene ratio, maleic acid/polyamine ratio and PIB molecular weight. A good correlation was found between molecular polarity (as expressed by poly-amine/polyisobutylene ratio) and soot dispersancy.
