From an automatic transmission engineer's standpoint, this paper describes testing procedures used to measure fluid properties such as viscosity, flash and fire points, foaming, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, durability, and friction. Also reported are the effects of fluid properties on transmission design, typical problems encountered, and design features that necessitate the specifying of particular fluid characteristics for some types of transmissions.
