This paper describes briefly the types of filters used in engine lube oil, fuel, intake air, and coolant systems as well as auxiliary systems such as hydraulics. The necessity for filtration is described, and the choice of filter installations is discussed. Some of the newer filter media developments are presented, and the various methods of evaluating product are reviewed. Rating systems aimed at placing numerical values on total filter performance are proposed with the hope that the engine and filter industry can attain some form of standardization.
