The paper will contain a brief background of the battery vehicle development, test and prototype fabrication which led up to the field demonstration. The field operation both in Culver City and Detroit will be described. The status of each site and a summary of data derived will be presented along with comments, conclusions and considerations for the future.CMC TRUCK 6 COACH DIVISION and the General Motors Corporation have long been involved in the development of electric vehicles. About three years ago, GMC Truck & Coach Division was designated by the Corporation to be the lead division in the development of commercial battery powered vehicles. This paper will briefly describe General Motors’ background in battery powered vehicles. It will then cover the van program at GMC, its relationship with the Department of Energy Demonstration Program, and the design, development and test programs. Next, it will cover the operation of these vehicles and present not only some statistical operational data, but some observations relative to their use and their importance in supporting some of the decisions needed to be made in moving toward production of battery powered vans.
