The unique problems encountered in the manufacture of space vehicles are reviewed. The role of the manufacturing engineer in the production of space vehicles is described by using examples from the S -IC stage and by discussing the missions of the Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory at the Marshall Space Flight Center. A conclusion is drawn that the manufacturing engineer is truly a professional by virtue of his training in engineering fundamentals, his experience, and his devotion to the public interest. Finally the training, recruitment, and growth of the professional manufacturing engineer are reviewed. Some missionary zeal by the profession is advocated.
