Equipment requirements for the maintenance, improvement, and development of highway roadside cover are discussed, with particular reference to the Illinois highway system. The types of mowers in use on the various tractor units are described: the sickle bar type mower for areas inaccessible to other types of mowers; the rear mounted rotary mower for all general mowing operations; the center mounted mower for dual lane divided highways; the pull type rotary mower for like areas; the side mounted rotary mower for steep slope mowing; and the hammer knife or flail mower. Tractor mower requirements are discussed, as is the use of chemicals to inhibit vegetation growth.
