THE results of a radiotracer study to obtain a better understanding of the factors governing piston-ring wear in passenger-car engines are presented in this paper. The study was conducted in a passenger-car engine which was equipped with radioactive top compression rings.The wear rates obtained were of the same order of magnitude as those observed in actual passenger-car service, demonstrating that significant results in terms of field performance can be obtained by running wear tests of relatively short duration with radioactive rings.The study revealed that a variety of interrelated factors have an important bearing on piston-ring wear in passenger-car service. These include: the operating regimes to which the vehicle is subjected, the temperature of the cylinder walls, the amount of dirt getting into the engine, the kind of fuel burned, and the kind of lubricant used.THE results of a radiotracer study to obtain a better understanding of the factors governing piston-ring wear in passenger-car engines are presented in this paper.
