THE results of a radiotracer study to obtain a better understanding of the factors governing piston-ring wear in passenger-car engines are presented in this paper. The study was conducted in a passenger-car engine which was equipped with radioactive top compression rings.The wear rates obtained were of the same order of magnitude as those observed in actual passenger-car service, demonstrating that significant results in terms of field performance can be obtained by running wear tests of relatively short duration with radioactive rings.The study revealed that a variety of interrelated factors have an important bearing on piston-ring wear in passenger-car service.
