A pedal force sensor which offers substantial improvements in cost effectiveness and ease of application is described. The sensor uses magnetostrictive techniques to measure the stress within the pedal arm and provide an output signal proportional to pedal force. The sensor is applicable to virtually any application using a ferromagnetic pedal arm and will accommodate a broad range of pedal dimensions and forces. The sensor will work well for brake pedal force measurement in both manual and power assisted braking systems.
