From recent nuclear excavation research come experimental data and theoretical techniques which can be used to design the excavation of an Isthmian, sea-level canal by means of nuclear explosions. Preliminary designs have been made for routes in the Darien region of eastern Panama and the Choco region of northwest Colombia. While there are important uncertainties, the outlook is promising for demonstrating the technical feasibility of the project, its safety, and its economy compared to conventional construction of a sea-level canal in the vicinity of the present Panama Canal.
