Pyrolysis and oxidation of toluene based mixtures have been studied behind reflected shock waves. The highly diluted mixtures (99 to 99.8% of argon) were heated between 1300 and 2700 K. The pressure was ranging from 0.2 to 1.8 Mpa. In order to assess the effect of oxygen on the soot formation, the the equivalence ratio was varied from 5 to 25. The induction time for soot formation was determined using a laser beam attenuation technique. The transmission of the radiation at 632.8nm was recorded simultaneously with the pressure versus time after the shock wave passage. From the transmission signals, the soot volume fraction, as well as the soot yield were determined in function of the reflected shock temperature. The optimal condition for soot formation, defined as the temperature for which the soot yield is maximum, was determined as well as the minimum temperature below which no soot particles were observed. Sample of soot particles formed in shock waves and collected after experiments have been analyzed by transmission electron microscopy for two magnifications (5x104 and 3.1x105) in order to determine the size of elementary spheres and their structural and microtextural characteristics. These parameters have been studied in relation with the experimental conditions. The sphere size decreases with temperature especially in presence of oxygen. The size of basic structural units increases with the shock wave temperature, the size being smaller when oxygen is added.
