This paper describes the initiation, development, and future outlook for the aircraft derivative gas turbine in ground-based applications. A short synopsis of the current applications of the gas turbine is given along with its accomplishments to date. Specific emphasis is placed on the development of the required technology as set forth by the demands of the electric utility industry.
