Douglas has been engaged for several years in the research and development of landing systems that will enable transport aircraft to operate in all weather conditions. The system being developed by Douglas is part of a total transportation system being developed by many agencies. The airborne part of the system involves automatic and manual modes, operating as a dynamic system. Inputs to the airborne system are generalized as aerodynamic, earth reference, and visible world. A successful system must properly integrate all of these elements.To achieve this integration, the system was synthesized, designed, laboratory tested, and finally flight evaluated in a DC-9 series 30 aircraft.This paper reviews the systems that were developed during the program and presents problems yet to be resolved.
