The Diesel engine has reached a high state of development and is, today, the best power plant available for heavy duty commercial vehicles. Its development is, however, far from having been concluded. Trends and future possibilities are being pointed out and the conclusion submitted that the superiority of the Diesel engine in this field is going to be retained for as long as can be foreseen. We who have participated in the development of the automotive Diesel for commercial vehicles are well aware of its newly-arrived potential competitors, the free piston engine and the gas turbine.
