Simultaneous engineering methods must be expanded to treat automotive powertrain systems. A brief description is given of the design aspects of powertrain systems simultaneous engineering. Specific issues are described for the engine crankshaft. The needs for a powertrain simultaneous engineering systems methodology are described.
