The development of a versatile diesel fuel injection system for direct injection engines is described, which offers the advantages of full electronic control of injection timing, fuel metering, and injection pressure.Electronic control is inherent and the system is so versatile that fuel quantity and timing may be varied throughout the available range in successive injections. Both piezoelectric and solenoid controlled versions are described, but all present development work is concentrated on the latter. Two sizes of injectors have been developed with maximum delivery capabilities of 130 mm3/injection and 500 mm3/injection, and both single and multi-cylinder engines have been run.
