The complexity of crew station development requires a cockpit design tool that is capable of rapidly generating realistic cockpit layouts and display formats. This tool must be straightforward in use and require only limited engineering support and maintenance. This Pilot Vehicle Interface (PVI) design tool, referred to as the Reconfigurable Cockpit (RCP), must simulate the hardware and software capabilities of any proposed crew station. Furthermore, the RCP must require only low-level-of-effort reconfiguration. The cockpit must be capable of displaying color raster and calligraphic data in orthographic and perspective views. The controls must be reprogrammable, relocatable, and reconfigurable in their size, type of action, and graphical attributes. The system must easily interface to generic simulation systems. The RCP must be capable of developing advanced operational/control logic and Head-Up (HUD) displays. A second generation RCP will provide Ada source code output.
