This paper presents an investigation into prototype magnetorheological (MR) fluid controllable damping technology that utilizes no sliding seals for operation. The result is viscous damping without stiction and wear associated with the abrasive nature of MR fluid. The goal of this effort was MR hardware technology whose performance can be precisely predicted for semi-active, closed loop control. An additional benefit of this effort is long-life MR hardware not subject to wear caused by fluid abrasion. It is desired that this technology be transitioned into widespread commercial applications. Results of this effort, the theoretical model, analysis, and supporting data are included.
