The sensitivity of injector performance to varying parameters was evaluated by means of the Taguchi Method for parameter-design experiments. Parameters included calibrations and manufacturing specifications. Performance was judged on the basis of flow, electrical characteristics, mechanical response, linearity, and endurance. The reliability of the Bendix Electronics DEKA fuel injectors was improved as a result of the experiment. Some of the reasons are: parameter limits were defined, dimensional tolerances could be adjusted without affecting injector performance or durability, and statistical control of machines and manufacturing processes became easier to implement than it had been prior to the experiment.
