As more subsystems become automated for use in the Station, there is a greater need for workstations to provide reliable and Independent assessment of the subsystem and system operation as a whole. To accomplish this task, the need to use the latest tools available for human-machine interfaces must be explored. The development work presented herein provides some of the basic approaches for accomplishing subsystem control and providing the status Information In a straight forward and direct manner as developed by an environmental control subsystem supplier. The building blocks of the workstation were limited only by imagination and budget. The technologies used were high resolution graphic displays, high density memories, programmable keyboards, and a high speed data bus. The end product enables the user to view the mechanical schematics of a process with real time data overlays and animated functions. The visual presentation is kept accurate with the process through the information flow on the data bus from the subsystem. In addition, the workstation provides diagnostics via trending of critical parameters, maintenance information, and manual control functions. Throughout the design, human factors played an important role in the development of the displays and keyboard.
