The new V-5 air conditioning compressor is an infinitely variable displacement compressor that changes displacement to exactly match the vehicle air conditioning demand. To control compressor capacity on current systems the clutch is cycled off and on thereby creating an engine disturbance which is becoming more noticeable as vehicles and engines are downsized. The V-5 compressor eliminates this objectional surge and allows smooth continuous operation. This compressor also provides an improvement in fuel economy and represents the first major change in automotive air conditioning technology in a quarter century. The V-5 compressor was designed and developed by the Harrison Radiator Division of General Motors. Harrison has been a leader in the automotive compressor industry, producing over 90,000,000 units to date, beginning with a 58 pound rotary in 1953 and culminating with this 12 pound compressor being used on certain 1985 vehicles.
