At present, manufacturers of charging systems components emphasize the importance of quality and thermal resistance of both mechanical and electronic elements of an alternator. The use of materials with lower thermal expansion, greater resistance to thermal operating conditions, and the increasingly frequent use of forced air cooling with dual fan housings inside the enclosure are the main course of actions employed to prevent the reduction of charging current in alternators. The paper presents an analysis of the experimentally obtained data aimed at plotting the characteristic curves illustrating the decrease in the efficiency of the charging systems. The relationship between the rotation speed of the alternator rotor and the load generated by the on-board receivers has been explained. For testing, alternators with rated currents of 70, 90, and 120 A were used, produced by various manufacturers. The obtained results confirm the validity of the research and indicate decrease in charging performance under the actual operating conditions in the engine compartment.
