This paper describes a variable-throat combustion chamber developed by I.F.P. and the Société d'Etude des Machines Thermiques. The chamber seems to offer advantages in overall efficiency with a reduced maximum pressure. It also shows a tendency to emit fewer pollutants than conventional combustion chambers. Design details are discussed, along with combustion speed, heat transfer coefficient, reliability testing, and emissions. The chamber is intended primarily for railroad locomotives.
