The increasing use of electronics in vehicle system control has created a need for accurate and reliable electronic transducers. A capacitive pressure transducer has been developed for use in the control of systems such as air conditioning, power steering, engine, transmission, suspension, and anti-lock brakes. This rugged, compact device can operate accurately to temperatures as high as 135 degrees C. Packaging techniques proven in high-pressure switches, a ceramic capacitive module made from alumina, and custom surface-mounted electronics have been incorporated to yield a cost-effective transducer suitable for underhood applications. This paper describes the design, performance, and durability of this transducer.
