This paper discusses very briefly the general need for gearing and its application to river boats. It describes the various types of gears, designs, and rating practices for marine gears and clutches as well as controls and gearing problems. General maintenance information and trouble shooting highlights are outlined.Torsional studies and the need and responsibility for them are reviewed. The functional relationship between the gear and the engine and the manufacturer’s responsibility for performance reliability is emphasized.
