Advantages of P/M gearing are economic and technical. The economic advantages derive from excellent material utilization, low labor intensity and high machine tool utilization. The technical advantages relate to shape capability for combined functions, part to part uniformity, controlled material elasticity, self-lubricating ability and inherent high surface finish. Attainment of the P/M gearing advantages can be attained by following a design procedure involving: economic justification of tooling; size, form and material classification; identification of tolerance class; identification of material class; and combining P/M design principles.
