This paper discusses the influence of oil drain interval on connecting rod bearings in linehaul diesel truck engines. Limiting factors, such as alkalinity depletion, viscosity increase and contamination, are considered for 2-cycle and 4-cycle diesel engines. The feasibility of extended oil drain service in terms of used oil alkalinity limits is evaluated from results of laboratory and field tests. The effects of oil drain interval on bearing distress, e.g., overlay removal and lining corrosion, are also discussed. In order to maximize bearing life, fleet operators should follow (1) good engine maintenance procedures and (2) the engine manufacturers' recommended oil change intervals.
