This paper describes the extensive design and development program undertaken to create the lighter and stronger 1962 Plymouth body. It discusses in detail the goals of this program, the steps taken to accomplish these goals, and the extent to which these goals were achieved. Included is a discussion of the basic design principles of weight reduction and control that were followed throughout. Data is presented which compares the strength and weight values of this car with previous models. Some specific areas of weight reduction are described and the effect of weight reduction on economy and performance is analyzed.
