Applications of Vehicle to Roadside Communications are examined as they apply to Commercial Vehicle Operations. The roadside infrastructure, in-vehicle electronics and the need for industry standards are explored. A macro view discusses federally funded projects that are seeding the infrastructure required to rapidly deploy this emerging technology. From a micro view, individual fleet, operator and governmental advantages are discussed. Weigh station preclearance and electronic toll collection are discussed, as well as future applications such as data exchange, automated border crossings and in-vehicle signing. The requirement for an open and expandable architecture to meet current and future needs is concluded.
