Recent developments in hydrostatic transmissions (HST's) and their controls have made this method of propulsion very suitable for medium-powered vehicles. For the purposes of our discussion, these machines are assumed to be in the range of 20 to 60 horsepower [15-45 kW]. Typically included are the following: The development of these new HST's and their controls has provided certain advantages. These advantages are realized in the areas of better horsepower-to-weight ratio, torque utilization, power density, engine characteristics, and overall vehicle dynamics and efficiency.
