This paper presents a general outline of the air pollution problem in the United States, with particular emphasis on the contributions made by the internal combustion engine. The reductions obtained in hydrocarbon, and carbon monoxide emissions by recent control systems are outlined. Alternate powerplants are mentioned, along with the problems of obtaining sufficient power if the United States were to switch to electric vehicles. SAE's continuing concern and activity in the area of emission control is described.
