The present method of measuring low shear Kinematic viscosity in centistokes by means of glass capillaries is compared and contrasted to low shear measurements of simple viscosity by rotational methods. Simple viscosity, measured in units of centipoise, corresponds more closely with the other viscosity measuring methods currently used in the industry regarding engine oil viscosity. This paper presents a new technique of reasonably good accuracy for directly measuring the simple viscosity of engine oil over a range of temperatures from 40 to 300 degrees Celsius quickly and reproducibly.
