Plating on plastics is a commercial operation, yet it is not known why metals adhere to plastics. Two leading theories emphasize mechanical and chemical bonding; these are discussed and related to the formulation of chemical etchants. Pull test adhesion values are related to the effect of etchants on ABS and polypropylene surfaces. The three principal methods for plating on plastics are then outlined.
