Types of engine wear such as lifter wear and ring wear are reviewed. The radiotracer method for measuring wear is evaluated. Using this system, a continuous, rapid record of wear events can be assimilated. By irradiating two parts by different methods, each part will emit gamma rays of different intensity, thus two irradiated test pieces can be measured simultaneously.Other areas of wear such as cycling temperature, abrasive, and cold starting tests were conducted and results are presented. In field service, the findings show a moderately high level of engine wear despite improvements in engine and accessory equipment. Use of gasoline additives can achieve wear reductions of 30–60%.
