A method for modeling high-speed barrier impacts using dynamic, large-deformation impacts of plastic scale models is presented. The method has proven useful for identifying and developing failure modes and for comparison studies. The technique has potential to permit estimates of absolute barrier performance, particularly gross energy management. Used properly, it can provide an effective means of barrier development early in the design process.
