Both the potential uses and the problems of nuclear thermionic reactor systems are discussed. The various design concepts for utilizing thermionic conversion in space reactor powerplants are summarized and evaluated. The in-core concept, now receiving the greatest interest, is described in some detail. The major problems of this concept and the progress made thus far toward their solution are reviewed. The overall state-of-the-art of thermionic conversion is also discussed from an engineering point of view, and estimates are given of the progress in thermionic conversion which can be anticipated within the next few years.
