Cylinder liner scuffing is one of the common problems arising out of inadequate cylinder lubrication in low speed 2-stroke marine cross head engines. Present paper comprises of the optimization studies of film strength and anti-scuff properties of marine cylinder lubricants in a variety of laboratory and mechanical rig tests. Basic detergent matrix and proper viscosity of finished lubricant alone can not achieve the desired film strength and anti-scuff properties. A combination of select anti-wear and film forming agent additives were found to be efficient in imparting sustainable film strength and anti-scuff properties to these lubricant formulations.
