Historically rubber has been a very intriguing material form and has stimulated and aided in the technological progress that the automotive industry has experienced. Since the initial discovery and development of natural rubber, the number of different types and grades within a type have significantly increased, making rubber one of the most adaptable and versatile engineering materials. With the advantages offered by the increase in rubber polymers that are available, comes the task of selection for various applications. Like the selection methods for other forms of materials, there is an orderly systematic process by which the proper rubber can be selected for the many automotive applications. This paper will guide you through the comparative relationship of one elastomer to another by reviewing some of the typical properties. Also, S.A.E. J-200/ASTM D-2000, “Classification System for Rubber Materials for Automotive Applications” will be described, along with some selection factors that should be considered when making a comparative choice. Last, the rubber selection process will be related to the “value-in-use” concept so as to help insure the most cost and performance effective rubber selection.
