This paper begins with an explanation of adhesion and a practical definition of adhesives. The response of common bond designs to typical stresses is then examined. Emphasis is placed on selecting designs which will utilize the energy absorbing characteristics of adhesives. Finally there is a discussion of the most common practical difficulties encountered in a production bonding operation.
