Major component and system upgrades have been implemented on the Cummins C Series diesel engine to allow higher power levels and improved durability for on and off-highway heavy duty applications. The modifications provide: increased thermal and mechanical loading capability of the power cylinder components; a significant improvement in lubrication system performance, including the incorporation of bypass oil filtration; and the development of optional performance related components for applications where a wide operating speed range or very low exhaust pollutant levels are desirable. The improvements were implemented during June, 1990, and represent the first major upgrade in the Cummins C Series engine since its introduction in 1985. It broadens the power range of the 8.3 liter inline six-cylinder, direct fuel injection C Series diesel engine from 190 KW to 205 KW for intermittent operation in an aftercooled configuration. The peak torque level capability similarly rises from 1050 N-M to 1165 N-M.
