Many methods for transferring best practices are based on a production model, which can reduce the likelihood of success. Inattention to the business challenges of potential adopting units, the complexity of the practice and the context in which it was implemented, and inflexibility in how it is adapted, can result in practices being rejected or failing to achieve the anticipated result. This paper proposes an alternative method for creating value by “propagating” best practices across contexts. This method is based on qualitative research conducted by the authors to learn from the experiences of organizations in corporate, public and non-profit sectors.
