Diesel engines are commonly attached to their support structure using resilient mountings or ‘vibration isolators’. With an engine having ‘six degrees of freedom’, there can be six different engine vibration modes that can influence one another. A focused engine isolation system uses the principle of projecting the elastic center of the isolator system to the center of gravity to achieve decoupling of the vibration modes, so improving isolation efficiency. At an early stage in the new engine system design, a focused isolation system can be incorporated by using angled mounting brackets and isolators with specific directional stiffness characteristics.
