The history and scope of the SAE Oil Labeling Assessment Program is presented along with the results of analyses on a total of 2,130 samples of engine oils purchased in the retail market over the last seven years. This includes the 1993 Sample Set. Most of the samples were labeled with API SF or API SG Service Categories in combination with API CC through CF-4 Commercial Category designations. Five samples, however, were obtained with the 1992 Sample Set which used only the API C Category. Also, 81 engine oil samples found to be questionably labeled were repurchased and analyzed; these results are included.
