A membrane technology for low power switches with integrated electronics has been developed which can be used in automotive applications. The technology is based on polyester membranes that are embossed to give the switch a tactile feedback. These membrane switches were tested in different environmental conditions to prove their ability to withstand the rugged environment in an automobile. Also three different methods of assembling of electronic components were investigated. These methods were gluing with isotropic adhesive, gluing with an-isotropic adhesive and crimping. The results demonstrate that the membrane switch technology developed meets the environmental requirements of the automotive industry and is ready for broader application in light vehicles.
